What causes Chickenpox?

Chickenpox is caused by a virus, the varicella-zoster virus.

What are the symptoms of chickenpox?
Common Symptoms:
- itchy rash with small blisters
- tiredness
- fever
- loss of appetite
- headache

How does chickenpox spread?
The chickenpox virus spreads through air by coughing and sneezing and by direct contact with fluid from a blister of a person infected with chickenpox or a sore from a person with shingles.

Common Side Effects:
- soreness at the injection site
- fever
- mild rash

Chickenpox is a vaccine-preventable disease.
